Man slits girlfriend’s throat

Victoria Kaapanda

Eefa Doukadona - A 23-year-old student became the latest victim of domestic and gender-based violence (GBV) after her 27-year-old boyfriend allegedly stabbed her several times and slit her throat with a knife. She died instantly.

The suspect, who works in Windhoek but originally comes from Ankambo village in Okaku constituency in Oshana Region, allegedly tried to commit suicide afterwards by hanging himself but the attempt failed.
The incident happened at Ongwediva, New Reception location on Sunday night.

The victim, a third-year student at Unam Hifikepunye Pohamba campus, comes from Eefa Doukadona village in the Ongwediva constituency.  She was allegedly stabbed five times in the chest and her throat was cut.

According to family members, the suspect, who was not known to the family, had frequent arguments with her over the phone. “I asked her if she had a boyfriend and she told me that she was dating a certain Fessy. She, however, did not give me many details of her relationship but one of my nieces who was close to her told me that of late she was always on the phone arguing with a boy,” said one of the deceased’s aunts.

Family members described her as a very bright but also very quiet girl who mostly kept to herself. And this could be the reason why she did not open up about her troubled relationship.
It is alleged the suspect, who is an artisan by profession, travelled from Windhoek on Friday and slept in the house where the victim was living alone.

On Sunday, he was apparently spotted drinking with a group of other men at a popular drinking hole in Ongwediva from morning until late at night. A few hours thereafter he handed himself over to the police confessing to the murder.
At the house of the deceased, police and neighbours were greeted by the gruesome scene as they found her in a pool of blood - dead. The suspect allegedly claimed that he discovered she had cheated on him and when he confronted her a fight broke between the two. It is alleged he first tried to stab her with kitchen knives but when two of them broke, he drew out his pocket knife that he used to kill her.

He then decided to go and hang himself a distance from her residence but the shoe laces he used for the planned suicide snapped.

By yesterday afternoon, the Deputy Commissioner of police in the Oshana region, Hilya Haipumbu, said the suspect had not yet been charged but he will soon appear in court.
