Dispatched thoughts - Before jumping into the year be rooted in reality

Every time we enter a new year, there is usually a strong urge to look to the future to try and reach for something new.

The year begins and the first thing we want to do is set new resolutions and imagine all that we can achieve over the course of the year.

There is nothing wrong with that, but sometimes we can get too caught up in the future trying to predict it, create it or even imagine it, almost like we become politicians before election season; there is always an optimistic future to look forward to and there are always promises being dished out.

Again, that’s not a bad thing. You need something to live and strive for, but we have a tendency of forgetting the present; disregarding reality!

The things we have and situations we currently find ourselves in are what make up life as we know it; being present in reality and working with or through what we have, especially the people in our lives.

If last year taught us anything, it is the true value that people bring to our lives and how their decisions can influence outcomes in our everyday life. You can’t do it alone; you are not the Messiah.

The reassuring fact is that you are not alone, there are those willing to help and guide you through the year.

For the youth, you just have to drop your ego and stop postponing what you know you have to do.

Life, as you have been dreaming it, is happening right now, what is in front of you is your reality.

I remember back in high school, our life skills teacher used to constantly tell us that in life, you only get one opportunity to do something. I can see where she was coming from when she said that. It’s true, you only have one opportunity in life before it passes, but what I have learned from experience is that while opportunities pass by, if they are missed, there is always another one around the corner; sometimes a better one than the one that you missed.

There are some things that don’t change over time, they remain constant and a distinctive feature in how we live our lives.

Having a loving and supporting group of people in your life, whether they are friends or family; the need for love has always been inherent in our existence as people.

That will always be the reality.
