Five Namibians languishing in Brazil prison

WINDHOEK – Namibian Ambassador to Brazil, Samuel Nuuyoma has urged Namibians to be on alert to drug trafficking scams, following a spate of cases involving Namibian girls being arrested for drug trafficking in that country.

Nuuyoma, speaking to New Era from Brasília, the federal capital of Brazil, on Wednesday, noted with concern the increase in incidents of Namibians, mostly young women, being arrested and detained in that South American country on drug trafficking offences.

He urged Namibians especially young girls to be on alert of illegal rings of drug traffickers who lure unemployed, naive young Namibians with lucrative jobs only to recruit them as drug mules.
“There are currently five Namibian female who are in prison in Brazil.

All of them were arrested in connection with cocaine,” said the former Governor of the Otjozondjupa Region.
“I therefore would like to inform our Namibian female visiting Brazil to always contact the Embassy for more information about Brazil.”

Speaking of the trade relations between the two countries, Nuuyoma said though Namibia currently does not export any goods to Brazil, the South American country exports about 3000 tons of goods to Namibia on a monthly basis.

He said currently, Namibia imports household goods and products such as assorted food and agricultural machinery from Brazil.

“I should also point out that the Embassy is busy at work to promote trade between the two countries. Many meetings are taking place between the business communities and the Embassy,” he said.
Nuuyoma said, as the Chairperson of the African Ambassadors Economic Committee, aimed at promoting investment in Africa, Namibia is a priority since he is the chair.

“I have much opportunities to engage the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, as well as other economic entities in Brazil. The possibility is visible, for Brazilian companies to invest in Namibia,” he said.

Furthermore, Nuuyoma stated that from the Naval Cooperation Agreement signed by both countries in 1994, 450 Namibians have been trained. There are also currently 42 Namibian students being trained by the Brazilian navy.
Apart from the training of Navy officials, Nuuyoma said 21 Namibians are also being trained at various Brazilian universities in technical subjects, such as engineering and civil engineering.

He said these students are sent to Brazil by the Ministry of Works to study and be the brain of government in the future.
