Nust to host a virtual run against Covid-19

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the shutdown of most normal activities, including those of charity organisations that raise funds for worthy causes.

Despite these challenges, the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust), through its wellness team, will be hosting a virtual run/fun walk this coming Saturday.

The initiative is aimed at raising funds towards Covid-19 for the Mount View High School, formerly known as the Tobias Hainyeko Project Secondary School.

Speaking to Youth Corner, Nust’s organisational development and learning acting manager Jonas Ileka said the initiative is part of the university’s community service efforts and aims to promote a healthy lifestyle while adhering to Covid-19 regulations.

“The event is open to the public and anyone can take part from anywhere in the world, through the Strava running app,” he said, adding that participants can walk or run distances, ranging from 5km,10km, 21km and 42km on a route of their choice.

The registration fee of N$60 will be charged, of which a percentage will go towards the Covid-19 relief for Mount View High School.

Situated in Windhoek’s Okahandja Park, Mount View High School is one of the impoverished schools in Windhoek.

“As one of the needy schools, we see it fit to assist them with what we have, especially during the pandemic. This is also continued support for the previous projects we have done for the school,” said Ileka.

For the past years, Nust has contributed greatly towards the development of the school – and some of its projects include starting up a public speaking and leadership club, donating a container with the aid of corporate partners for an extra classroom, offered Maths tutoring for the entire high school and providing monthly food parcels to the total value of N$24 000.

Furthermore, Ileka sees the virtual run as a chance for everyone to have fun – and it simultaneously helps to generate awareness about a healthy lifestyle while contributing to a worthy cause, therefore urging all able-bodied people to take part.

ll participants will be given a medal, and a Nust-branded buff will be given away to the first 20 paid-up entrants.
