‘Ondjila’ to the top

Inspired by his grandfather playing the xylophone at home at night, Simeon Ashilungu Golden Kambonde started entertaining his fellow learners during school shows in 2011 by dancing and singing to other artists’ songs.

He then began making his own music in 2016 when he moved to Windhoek to further his studies, and he is currently shooting a music video for his song, ‘Ondjila’, released in July this year.

The rap, Afropop and amapiano artist explained that ‘Ondjila’, which means journey, in Oshiwambo, is a positive message, based on various life experiences.

“Sometimes, people are not happy with whatever you are doing – but then they cover up with smiles. So, the song motivates you, me or whoever to keep going, cos people are always gonna hate or try to stop you,” he told VIBEZ!

“The song was inspired by my own life, but I didn’t make it personal, so that anyone can relate to it,” he added.

Kambonde (26), who coined his stage name XT from Xylophone Tunes, released a Hip Hop/rap extended play (EP) in 2016, titled ‘Whole of my life’.

This was followed up with the ‘Evolution’ single, also a Hip Hop/Rap, in 2019 – and ‘Yugati’, an Afropop/Afrobeat song last year.

“Ever since I released an EP in 2016, which only a few people know about, I decided not to release any project apart from singles to keep the pace while I work on myself. The goal is to reach a certain level where the recognition is quite huge. That’s when I can work on a project knowing that I can expect huge attention and response.”

Also motivated by Gazza, Sunny Boy and international artists like Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa, Kambonde said he stuck with up-and-coming producer Blaq Marikoto after trying several others.

“I like working with an individual who understands and has time to master the craft.”

All his collaborations featured fellow upcoming artists, such as Bankie Gorilla, Kid Tinno, Vocksy, Desire Binho Boy and others.

The Eunda-born Kambonde has performed at various festivities, such as the Unam Cultural festival, IUM Cultural Festival, clubs like Pinas Entertainment, Chicago’s and several randomly hosted shows.

Apart from music, he also does graphic design, video editing and photography as the owner of XT Creations Group.

He promised fans more music and visuals real soon.
