PDM condemns Chamisa ‘assassination attempt’

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) parliamentary chief whip Vipua Muharukua has strongly condemned an alleged assassination attempt on leading Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.

Chamisa, who leads the MDC Alliance, reportedly survived an assassination attempt in Mutare, Zimbabwe, as he travelled from Chipinge district, where he had interfaced with traditional leaders and villagers last week.

“Our operatives in Zimbabwe are reporting political tensions and violence – and from the information we have received, it appears that the Zanu-PF and its supporters are engaging in continued frustration of what should be a free and fair electoral process,” Muharukua said in a statement last week.

“We are confidently informed that President Chamisa’s convoy was intercepted by armed suspected Zanu-PF youth, who fired gunshots, hitting the opposition leader’s vehicle while on tour in Manicaland province, mobilising support ahead of the 2023 elections,” he added.

He said the continuous use of state machinery to frustrate and suppress the voices of citizens should come to an end in the Southern Africa.

“We further urge the Namibian and other SADC governments to publicly condemn the barbaric actions by those who are hell-bent on hampering the electoral process in neighboring countries,” he said.
