Rain wreaks havoc on southern roads

Rain wreaks havoc on southern roads

The Roads Authority (RA) has asked all road users to exercise extra caution and be vigilant on their journeys, especially in areas where good rains have fallen. 

The RA noted that showers have started falling again in southern , which in some cases have hindered repair works. 
“Please take note that it has started to rain in the southern regions again and our effort to restore the links might be delayed. We will, however, continue to inspect and assess the condition of the roads and erect warning signs at damaged sections accordingly. Where possible, we will ensure that emergency repair works are done to allow access to the public,” read a statement from the RA. 
It also provided an update on the status of damaged roads in southern Namibia: 

B1 route (trunk road TR 1/2 ): 
Grünau to Keetmanshoop road 

The eastern road shoulder at 121km near Guruchab river bridge was extensively damaged. However, the road is open to traffic and RA has erected road signs to warn road users about the damaged section. The road is narrow, kindly exercise extreme caution. 

Main road (MR) 27 or tourist route C16: From Keetmanshoop to Aroab

The Stampriet river flooded this road and caused extensive damage to the sections near the river bridge, hence the road has been closed temporarily to all traffic. 

Main road 22 (MR 22): Gravel roads from Noordoewer to Karasburg

MR 22 is now accessible and open to traffic, however, road users are cautioned to drive slowly and vigilantly as it is still raining in the area.

Homs river bridge in Warmbad on district road 210 (D210)

D210 has been closed temporarily to traffic due to damage to the bridge near Warmbad. 
Main road 30 (MR 30) or tourist route C17: From Keetmanshoop to Koës

A portion on this road was severely damaged, hence the road has been closed temporarily to all traffic.
 
Main road 29 (MR 29): gravel road from Keetmanshoop to Mariental via Vaalgras

The Vaalgras river flooded the road and caused extensive damage to a portion of the road near the river, hence the road has been closed temporarily to all traffic. 

District roads 609 & D 511: From Keetmanshoop to Berseba

The Fish river crosses both roads and currently it is not safe to access both roads. The roads are closed temporarily to all traffic. 

MR 25/tourist route C11: From Karasburg to MR 26 junction

A section on this road from Karasburg to MR 26 junction was severely washed away at 85km, thus this road is closed temporarily to all traffic.
