SUNDAY is set - we shall lay to rest a son of the soil, a true statesman - Hage Gottfried Geingob.
The nation will come together to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of a leader whose impact transcends borders and generations. Geingob’s tenure as the third President of Namibia was marked by his unwavering commitment to democracy, prosperity, and the well-being of his fellow citizens.
As we bid farewell to this visionary leader, let us reflect on his enduring contributions and the indelible mark he leaves on our nation and the world.
Throughout his illustrious career in public service, Geingob stood out as a steadfast defender of democracy, advocating the rights and freedoms of all Namibians. From his early involvement in the liberation struggle to his tenure as President, he remained steadfast in his belief that democracy is not just a system of governance, but a fundamental human right that must be protected and upheld.
Under his leadership, Namibia continued to strengthen its democratic institutions, ensuring that the voices of the people were heard and respected.
Geingob’s legacy is perhaps best encapsulated by his Harambee Prosperity Plan, a blueprint for inclusive growth and development. Rooted in the principle that no one should feel left out or marginalised, this plan aimed to uplift every Namibian, regardless of their background or circumstances. Geingob understood that true prosperity can only be achieved when everyone has access to opportunities for advancement and success.
His legacy lives on in the countless lives touched and transformed by his vision of a more equitable and prosperous Namibia.
Beyond his domestic achievements, Geingob was a champion of peace and prosperity on the international stage. Like a lion, he faced and minced no words when facing those who dared to threaten or mock Namibia’s democracy, peace or economic independence.
As chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security, he worked tirelessly to promote dialogue, cooperation, and stability among member states. His leadership was instrumental in advancing the collective interests of the region and ensuring that southern Africa remained a beacon of hope and progress for all its citizens.
Geingob’s advocacy extended to the global arena, where he championed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on the UN stage, making echoes that resonated far beyond Namibia’s borders. His commitment to renewable energy and his efforts to bridge the gap between the haves and have-nots underscored his dedication to building a more just and sustainable world for future generations.
Amid the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Geingob’s leadership remained remarkably steadfast and unwavering. In his 78th United Nations General Assembly speech, he said: “The health of the nation is a bedrock for all developmental activities.”
He lived by his word as Namibia stood out as one of the countries that managed Covid-19 in an exemplary way and lives were saved during that difficult time because of the provision of credible information, access to vaccines as well as capacitating the relevant health authorities with the resources to fight the pandemic.

Omes, as we all affectionately referred to him, stood as a steadfast defender of media freedom, recognising its pivotal role in upholding democracy and fostering an informed society. Firmly believing in the principles of freedom of speech enshrined in the Namibian Constitution, he championed the rights of journalists to report without fear or intimidation.
Under his leadership, Namibia continued to uphold its reputation as one of Africa’s freest and most vibrant media landscapes, where diverse voices could flourish without censorship or repression. Geingob’s unwavering commitment to media freedom leaves an enduring legacy, reminding us of the critical importance of a free press in safeguarding democratic values and promoting accountability at all levels of society.
As we bid farewell to Hage Geingob, let us take solace in the knowledge that his legacy will endure as a source of inspiration and guidance for generations to come.
