Fireworks expected at Athletics National Champs …Mboma will be in action

Fans can anticipate an electrifying display of athleticism when Athletics Namibia (AN) hosts its national championships today and tomorrow at the Independence Stadium in the capital.

Over 200 athletes are expected to compete in track and field events.

Adding to the excitement, 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Christine Mboma will race in the 200 metres (m).

Speaking to this publication yesterday, the secretary general of AN track and field Bethold Karumendu expressed readiness to host the event.

“This is one of the most significant athletics events on our calendar, and we anticipate top-notch performances as our elite athletes take to the track, starting today,” he stated.

“Clubs from all corners of the country will be represented, showcasing their talent from various regions. However, Zambezi and Kunene are not going to field any athletes for this event.”

Asked if the event could serve as a qualifying opportunity, Karumendu clarified, “It’s a World Athletics-sanctioned event, but one cannot qualify through this type of competition because they don’t have any other elite athletes from other countries.”

Ndawana Haitembu, set to compete in the 100m race, expressed eagerness for the upcoming challenge, saying, “The lineup for Saturday looks incredible, and the competition will be fierce.”

“Having Christine competing alongside us adds an extra layer of excitement. Competing with athletes of her calibre inspires us to strive for excellence and achieve our best performances,” she said.

Mboma recently competed at the Kip Keino Classic Tour in Kenya, where she ended the race in last position.
