N$206 million cocaine bail hearing today

WALVIS BAY - The bail application for the two suspects implicated in the N$206 million cocaine case is set to commence today in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects, South African national and businessman, Dinath Azhar, 62, who resides at Longbeach, and Grant Noble, 36, who had previous run-ins with the law have been in police custody since their arrest on June 15.

According to information availed to New Era, the duo’s bail application hearing is expected to run until Thursday.

Azhar and Noble were arrested after the Namibian Police, Namport Security, and Customs and Excise intercepted a container carrying 412 kilogrammes of pure cocaine, at the port of Walvis Bay.

The container arrived on June 9, on a vessel from Brazil, coming via Cape Town to Namibia, and was kept under surveillance by port security that received an international tip-off about the large consignment of cocaine on its way to Walvis Bay.

The duo during their first court appearance were denied bail by Walvis Bay Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis after the prosecutor Thersia Hafeni successfully opposed bail by indicating that the charge was very serious. Nicolaidis had initially denied the suspects bail and postponed their case to September 20.
Noble was represented by Jan Wessels while Azhar was represented by Marinus Scholtz.
