Namwater dominates SOE games

Namwater dominated the three-day 2023 Public Service Enterprises Games which kicked off on 1 June and ended yesterday in Rietfontein, Otjozondjupa region by winning four of the seven sports codes contested. 

Victoria Iyambo broke the women’s 10-kilometre record by coming home in 1 hour 00 minutes to claim the gold medal, three minutes ahead of Selma Liinge of the National Youth Service (NYS) who settled for the silver medal. 

Naomi Sheetokela was third in 1 hour and 10 minutes. 

In the men’s 10-kilometre race, Thomas Andreas also set a new record time of 43 minutes to win gold ahead of Augustinus Mbathera of Nampower, who claimed a silver medal in 47 minutes and Electricity Control Board’s (ECB) Aludhilu Tangeni closely in third for a bronze medal in a time of 48 minutes, five 5 seconds. 

Namwater claimed their second gold medal in the form of their female relay team who beat NYS for second and National Training Authority (NTA) in third. 

NYS then claimed gold in the men’s relay ahead of Nampower, and National Airports Company (NAC). 

In the mixed Darts competition, Agribank came out tops ahead 

of Namcor and Social Security Commission (SSC) in second and third. 

Namwater then claimed their third gold medal in mixed Tug of War ahead of NAC and Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) in second and third respectively. 

The water utility company then completed their dominance at the games by winning the female netball competition ahead of Agribank and NAC, while mixed Volleyball was won by Nampower, ahead of Agribank and NAC. 

Namibia Bro a d c a s t i ng Corporation emerged victorious in football after beating Road Authority in penalties with NTA coming in third. 

Chairperson of the Public Service Enterprises - Chief Executive Officers Forum Games Albert Khevare told New Era Sport that the games were a huge success. 

“Everything went well, we did not encounter any problems and two records were broken. The newly-introduced games (darts and athletics) were a hit with the participants. We will assess this year’s games and see how possible it is for us to introduce new games next year,” he said. The 2024 edition of the Public Service Enterprises games will be held in Oshakati in the first week of June.
