Okay, so the headline is a little dramatic, considering borders have been open for a while, but I needed a little drama for my first international travel piece; you know?

Cape Town is undeniably one of the best cities in the world (erm, to visit not to live in). If I’m frank, it is definitely one of my favourite tourist destinations in Africa.

Where is this Cape Town I speak of?

Popularly known as The Mother City, Cape Town is a city in South Africa. It is Africa’s number one city for business tourism. It is also popular for its white sandy beaches and tourist attractions such as Table Mountain and Robben Island.  

As a Namibian, why should I consider Cape Town for my next vacation? I am so happy you asked. There is so much about Cape Town that’s attractive, so much! 

The first attractive thing about Cape Town is how accessible it is to Namibians. The city is a mere 

two-hour flight from Windhoek.

Secondly, unlike many popular tourist attractions, accommodation in Cape Town is largely affordable. To contextualise it, a night for two people in a Cape Town apartment using Airbnb can cost anything between N$600 and N$1 200. Two things you should have picked up here: The rate is per room and not per person; and as mentioned, very affordable Naturally, rates can be much higher for luxury travellers and also significantly lower for the budget traveller. The point was mainly to highlight inclusivity and affordability. 

Thirdly, there is so much to do!

The activities in Cape Town are so many and so varied. There is something for everyone and I’m about to share some of my favourites and why I enjoyed them.

The Zeitz Mocaa

Travel is so important to me, I personalise it. It is so important to me that the trips I take reflect who I am, that they involve the things I love and enjoy, that they match my budget and also that I do a little bit of learning, and experience something new; you know? It matters to me and that’s what the visit to the Zeitz Mocaa was. 

The Zeitz Mocaa is the largest museum of contemporary art in Africa. I don’t particularly understand art but I somewhat knew what it commanded me to feel as I entered a room.  Some rooms felt dark and sad, some made me feel uncomfortable and in others, I felt light, almost happy. I strongly suggest a visit to the museum if you ever find yourself in The Mother City. Worth all the money!

La Colombe Restaurant

I want to say this without being misunderstood, but you haven’t experienced food until you have been to the La Colombe Restaurant in Constantia. 

The restaurant offers a nine-course menu with appropriate wine pairings; it is a production! The service is amazing, the food is divine and the aesthetics – a creator’s dream.

Wine tasting

You haven’t been to Cape Town if you haven’t gone to the winelands (read Stellenbosch). Cape Town is wine heaven and the options are so wide. The price range is anything between N$70 -200 for five tastings.
