Oshakati set for the Mayoral Cup

OSHAKATI - The Oshakati Town Council is scheduled to host the Mayoral Cup for the fourth year, running from 9 to 12 May this year, at the town’s Independence Stadium.

According to Oshakati town mayor Leonard Hango, the town council has set aside N$92 000 for the competition, and they are now inviting interested teams to register  and participate.

Hango said the tournament aims to excite the inhabitants of Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena, and Oshikoto and revive sport in the northern part of the country.

“Through sport, we are giving back to the community. We don’t just think about issuing municipal bills. We also want citizens to reap the benefits,” said Hango.

He said that introducing and promoting sports has entertainment value but also has the potential to reduce crime and other social evils.

According to Hango, such tournaments will also benefit the town in the long run through sales of business services.

“It’s an open tournament for all teams, whether premier league teams, local teams, or organisations,” he said.

A grand prize of N$22 000, a trophy, and gold medals are up for grabs in the young soccer division.

The second-place finisher will receive N$14 000 in addition to silver medals, the semi-final loser will receive N$5 500, and the quarter-final loser will receive N$1 000.

The winner of the legend soccer category will receive N$9 000, a trophy, and 18 gold medals.

Silver medals and N$6 000 will be awarded to the second-place finisher. Semi-finalists will receive N$3 000 each. The legendary teams will strictly consist of players over 37 years old.

In contrast, netball winners will receive N$4 000, a trophy, and 12 gold medals, while the runners-up will receive N$3 000 and 12 silver medals, and the semi-finalists will receive N$1 500 each.
