As Namibians gathered in Katima Mulilo yesterday to mark the 34th Independence Day anniversary of the country, we were reminded of the valour and sacrifices made by our forebears, the brave sons and daughters of our soil, who traversed treacherous paths to secure the freedom and dignity we cherish today.
True independence is the cornerstone of a thriving nation, embodying the aspirations and rights of its people. It is a testament to the resilience and spirit of a united populace, striving for a better tomorrow.
The country’s journey to independence, culminating on 21 March 1990, will stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.
As we celebrate this milestone, we also pay tribute to the legacy of the late president Hage Geingob, a champion of the people. Though his passing has left a void, his indelible mark on our nation will serve as a guiding light for many years.
Government must be applauded for taking the celebrations to all the regions.
As we reflect on the significance of freedom, we must remember the pivotal role played by the resilient people of the Zambezi region in our struggle for liberation. Amidst adversity and hardship, they stood unwavering, forging ahead with courage and determination.
Despite facing myriad challenges, including droughts, economic downturns, and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Namibia have emerged stronger, guided by the principles of democracy, transparency, and effective governance.
Together, Namibians have weathered the storms, demonstrating unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering unity amidst diversity.
We must seize the opportunities that lie ahead with determination.
The recent discoveries of oil and gas, coupled with investments in green hydrogen, herald a new era of economic prosperity for our nation. With a budget aimed at creating jobs and empowering our citizens, we stand poised to unleash our full potential and chart a course towards a brighter tomorrow.
In the Zambezi region, critical infrastructure projects from electrification initiatives to road upgrades and agricultural ventures are underway to spur economic development and improve the lives of the people for sustainable progress and inclusive growth.
However, no journey towards prosperity is without challenges.
Namibians must remain vigilant against threats to peace and stability, standing united against division and discord.
As we approach the upcoming National and Presidential Elections, we must uphold the values of democracy and ensure a peaceful, free, fair and credible electoral process, safeguarding the future of our nation.
