Truck driver arrested after fatal crash

A 49-year-old man employed by the ministry of sport and youth died in a tragic accident outside Henties Bay in the Erongo region yesterday morning.

The accident, involving a white freight liner truck and white government Toyota double-cab pick-up, took place on the C-34 Swakopmund-Cape Cross main road on the outskirts of Henties Bay.

According to the police report, it is alleged that a 23-year-old Zimbabwean national driver (suspect) was driving the white freightliner truck from Walvis Bay en-route to Zimbabwe and took a wrong route towards Henties Bay.

The report further alleged that while the driver was driving outside Henties Bay, he received a call that he took the wrong road and that he must turn back to Swakopmund.

He allegedly tried to turn, and whilst in the process of turning the truck, he saw a car coming from the Swakopmund direction – and unfortunately, he could not avoid the accident.

“The white double cab pick-up, with the driver, a 49-year-old Namibian male (deceased), who was alone in the vehicle, driving from the same direction as the truck, collided and drove underneath the trailer of the truck,” the police report reads.

The driver of the government vehicle was declared dead at the scene.

The truck driver was unharmed, read the report.

According to the report, the truck driver was arrested and was due to appear in the Henties Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
